Century Wooden Oak Gargoyle Chimera European. Century European Gothic style wooden furniture ornament, masterfully hand carved, represents a mythological "chimera", a monstrous fire-breathing animal composed of a lion, a snake and a goat.
Inspired by gargoyles from medieval cathedrals, this mythic beast became popular as a decorative motif with the rise of the Gothic Revival style, which began in the 18th. Century and continued throughout the 19th.
This piece is in very good condition with the exception of a small fissure in the wing, a small loss of wood on the projection above the chimera's head and a few signs of wear on the varnished surface, all lending it a lovely antique patina. Please refer to the detailed photos on this page. We presently have the other piece which makes a matching pair, see below. We also have an antique French wooden chandelier with gargoyles.
