Century Wooden Oak Gargoyle Chimera European. Century European Gothic style wooden furniture ornament, masterfully hand carved, represents a mythological "chimera", a monstrous fire-breathing animal composed of a lion, a snake and a goat. Inspired by gargoyles from medieval cathedrals, this mythic beast became popular as a decorative motif with the rise of the Gothic Revival style, which began in the 18th. Century and continued throughout the 19th. This piece is in very good condition with the exception of a small crack on the back side which has been filled in, a small loss of wood on the projection above the chimera's head, as well as a few signs of wear on the wood and the varnished surface.
