Antique Victorian Gothic Stationery Box. Desk
A good Victorian oak stationery box with combined desk. The well figured warm oak has mellowed to a lovely rich colour with nice patination. The brass mounts have gothic styling and also has brass carrying handles and front pull. The top has a vacant shield plate as well a a similar brass escutcheon and working key. A registered number is to be found on the lip of the lower opening stationery compartment. When the unlocked lid is opened it also activates the front opening compartment. The top section contains a desk like arrangement similar to a writing slope with compartments for ink, pens and other desk top paraphernalia. There is a metal frame to the underside for a calendar.
The lower section opens to reveal compartments for paper and envelopes (one section partially missing). Generally very good condition - this box needs minimal work. The odd chip to front beading, broken hinge that is readily replaced and the odd brass stud missing. No refinishing needed at all.
The box presents extremely well and is a handsome example of this metamorphic type stationery box with combined desk set up. With its gothic mounts and handles cleaned this item will look super. Size:- W - 31 cm. D - 18.5 cm.
