This pair of floral carved oak panels were likely part of a much larger piece. The geometric tracery pattern is typical of the Gothic period and was often used for ecclesiastical buildings. Gothic art was a style of medieval art that developed in Northern France out of Romanesque art in the 12th century AD, led by the concurrent development of Gothic architecture.
It spread to all Western Europe, and much of Northern, Southern and Central Europe. Primary media in the Gothic period included sculpture, panel painting, stained glass, fresco, and illuminated manuscripts. Tracery is an architectural device by which windows, screens, panels, and vaults are divided into sections of various proportions, found on both the interior and exterior of buildings. The early phase of the Middle Pointed style (late 13th century) is charactised by geometrical tracery, where the use of geometry was important in producing traceries proportionatly, helping to create correct angles for the design.
These panels would now make excellent pieces of decorative wall art. Please note: There has been a previous honest repair to one panel, shown in the pictures. This does not detract from the functionality or aesthetics of the piece.
